The optifine mod can give you a huge performance gain, helped on my computer a TON

basically you can either run the installer on windows, or run the jar on any OS
"java -jar OptiFine_1.8.0_HD_U_B2.jar" for example, it will install an optifine profile into your minecraft launcher
then you select that profile to launch the game!
